Attic Conversion Planning & Council Approvals
Approvals are where most attic projects succeed or stall. Knowing early whether your conversion is exempt, qualifies for a Complying Development Certificate, or needs a full Development Application saves months and prevents nasty surprises.
These guides walk through the NSW approval pathways, the structural and head-height requirements that determine feasibility, and how long each stage realistically takes.
Some conversions are exempt; others need CDC or full DA approval
Minimum roof pitch and head height decide if your roof is suitable
CDC is usually faster than a DA when your project qualifies
A legal bedroom must meet ceiling height, egress and light rules

Read guideCommon questions
Do I need council approval for an attic conversion?
It depends on the scope and your property. Minor storage work may be exempt, many habitable conversions qualify for a fast-tracked Complying Development Certificate (CDC), and more complex projects need a full Development Application (DA). Our approvals guides explain which path applies to you.
What roof pitch do I need for an attic conversion?
A steeper roof pitch gives more usable head height. As a rule of thumb, the steeper and taller your roof, the easier the conversion. Our roof pitch guide explains the minimums and how we assess borderline roofs.
How long does the approval process take?
CDC approvals are typically much faster than a DA, which involves council assessment and public notification. Our timeline guide sets out a realistic week-by-week schedule from inspection through approval to construction.
